Nitinol Super Elastic Wire ASTM F2063 Annealed, Straightened, Cut gets its name from its elemental composition and the discovery team who first recognized the potential of this powerful alloy (Nickel Titanium Naval Ordinance Laboratory). Nitinol alloys have the intriguing ability to recover a preset shape, even after drastic distortion. Composition is typically 55-56 percent Nickel and 44-45 percent Titanium, but slight adjustments of this ratio can significantly impact the properties of the material. There are two primary but overlapping categories of Nitinol. Our Nitinol Wire is a SuperElastic alloy which can be strained at least eight to ten times more than ordinary spring steel without permanent deformation. It can be rather severely compressed, bent or otherwise distorted, but snaps back to its preset or trained shape with considerable force that can be used as work. A new memory is imparted by restraining the material in exactly the shape required and heating to a temperature above 932F (500C) for a minimum of five minutes. The shape will be set upon cooling and will exhibit the same flexibility and resistance to deformation as the original wire. It can be repeatedly retrained to achieve new shapes. Prosthetic devices routinely utilize Nitinol alloys. Excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility contribute to Nitinols continued growth in the medical device world. Length Tolerance is + 1/8 / - 0 inches.

Stainless Steel 316LVM Wire (ASTM F138 Chemistry Only) is 316L (VM is Vacuum Arc Remelted). The wire is spring tempered, drawn, straightened, cut and cleaned with a bright finish. The wire only meets chemistry of ASTM F138 due to loss in tensile strength as a result of the straightening process yielding a 10% loss in strength. It does however meet ASTM A313 for tensile strength. 316LVM is formulated similar to commercial quality stainless steel, but has been refined by melting or re-melting in a vacuum, a process that segregates the melt from oxygen, nitrogen and other ambient gases, resulting in a cleaner, higher-quality, more pure stainless steel. 316LVM Stainless Steel offers high corrosion resistance for many conditions, particularly when working with phosphoric and acetic acids. This wire comes gun-barrel straight and clean with a bright finish. Many of the sizes listed fit inside diameters of our Hypodermic Tubing. NOTE: When ordering wire, always specify exact dimensions in decimals. Stating gage sizes can lead to confusion, since wire diameters may conform to various gaging systems. Hypodermic tubing gage sizes are based on the Birmingham Gage, also known as Stub's Iron Wire Gage.

Alloy 6063, one of the most popular alloys in the 6000 series, provides good extrudability and a high quality surface finish. In the heat-treated condition, alloy 6063 provides good resistance to general corrosion, including resistance to stress corrosion cracking. It is easily welded or brazed by various commercial methods (caution: direct contact by dissimilar metals can cause galvanic corrosion). Since 6063 is a heat-treatable alloy, strength in its -T6 condition can be reduced in the weld region. Selection of an appropriate filler alloy will depend on the desired weld characteristics. Consult the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for proper safety and handling precautions when using alloy 6063. Alloy 6063 offers excellent response for anodizing in its -T5, -T52 , -T53 (“matte finish”), -T54, -T6 (“lustrous” finish) tempers. The most common methods are clear, clear and color dying, and bright dipping and hard coat. Bright dipping provides an economical alternative to mechanical polished finishes while offering improved surface durability.
