Nitinol Super Elastic Wire ASTM F2063 Annealed, Straightened, Cut gets its name from its elemental composition and the discovery team who first recognized the potential of this powerful alloy (Nickel Titanium Naval Ordinance Laboratory). Nitinol alloys have the intriguing ability to recover a preset shape, even after drastic distortion. Composition is typically 55-56 percent Nickel and 44-45 percent Titanium, but slight adjustments of this ratio can significantly impact the properties of the material. There are two primary but overlapping categories of Nitinol. Our Nitinol Wire is a SuperElastic alloy which can be strained at least eight to ten times more than ordinary spring steel without permanent deformation. It can be rather severely compressed, bent or otherwise distorted, but snaps back to its preset or trained shape with considerable force that can be used as work. A new memory is imparted by restraining the material in exactly the shape required and heating to a temperature above 932F (500C) for a minimum of five minutes. The shape will be set upon cooling and will exhibit the same flexibility and resistance to deformation as the original wire. It can be repeatedly retrained to achieve new shapes. Prosthetic devices routinely utilize Nitinol alloys. Excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility contribute to Nitinols continued growth in the medical device world. Stainless Steel Rectangular Bar Type 303 ASTM-A582 is a free-machining alloy with sulfur content that enhances its machinability. Typical applications include bolts, bushings, nuts, shafts, and parts produced on automatic screw machines. Stainless Steels are alloys of iron and carbon that contain between 12 percent and 30 percent Cr, plus other alloying elements. The chromium, which helps develop a passive surface oxide film, provides corrosion resistance in stainless steels. Stainless Steels are wrought or cast and consist of several families that are named for their metallurgical structure. Stainless Steels are fabricated and welded by all common processes and are used for their corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, scaling resistance, and low-temperature toughness. Density is .29 lbs./in3. Formability is good, and cold working results in increased strength. This alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, although it may become slightly magnetic after cold working. It can be hardened only by cold working, and not by heat treatment. Aluminum 6061 is one of the most widely used alloys in the 6000 series. This standard structural alloy, one of the most versatile of the heat-treatable alloys, is popular for medium to high strength requirements and has good toughness characteristics. Alloy 6061 has excellent corrosion resistance to atmospheric conditions and good corrosion resistance to seawater. This alloy also offers good finishing characteristics and responds well to anodizing; however, where cosmetic appearance is critical, consider the use of alloy 6063. For screw machine applications, alloy 6061 has adequate machinability characteristics in the heat-treated -T6/-T6511 condition. Chips from machining (particularly turning and drilling) can be difficult to break in the -T6/-T6511 temper condition. Chip breakers are recommended, and special machining techniques (i.e. peck drilling) can improve chip formation.

Our 17-7 PH precipitation-hardened Spring Temper Wire (ASTM 313 Chemistry Only) is furnished cold drawn in Condition C (AMS 5678), cleaned and straightened. Its elastic properties permit reforming into a specific shape and it can be formed into springs or into required patterns as in the case of diagnostic catheters. This is accomplished by taking the formed cold drawn wire (Condition C) and aging it at 900F (482C) for one hour (to Condition CH900). 17-7 Spring Wire provides good corrosion resistance, excellent fatigue properties and minimum distortion during heat treatment. In addition, the material retains its load bearing properties with little or no relaxation up to 850 degrees F. Furnished in "gun barrel straight lengths. Compatible with tube gauges 25-26.
